Some friends from the film industry reached out to me about an idea they had to create a new kind of dating app that leverages face-to-face communication over swiping on profiles. Their ask of me was to run the design and development of the product, and to support marketing initiatives.
Dating profiles are over-engineered and don't reflect how people truly look and act. If this is the case, how can we expect to form meaningful relationships using them?
Through empathy interviews we discovered that people would rather go on virtual dates to test compatibility than to meetup in person. We looked at what other apps are doing and the trend towards virtual dates validated our hypothesis.
By putting you face to face with a potential partner, you get to experience their personality and appearance all at once. We are drawn to people by physical attraction, but true compatibility comes from mutual interests and experiences. We knew we had to put this front and center within the platform.
After a dating app user matches with someone, the pain points seem to be significantly less. These users complain only about a lack of responses or poor conversations. This problem can be solved by improving the quality of matches.
Virtual speed dating is the best of both worlds! You get exposure to many potential partners, and make informed judgements on compatibility. To prevent awkwardness and promote safety, either user can end the virtual date at any point in time. Additionally, virtual dates will be capped to several minutes to keep a consistant flow of users.
After you match with someone, the app operates like any other dating app where you message matches. This is a common successful feature among other dating apps, and we believe an essential part of the user experience.
We are gearing up to trial the app within the film industry. We know these are busy people busy schedules typically ending after 7pm every night. Dating pain points seem to be particularly large in this industry, and we are excited to see how trials go.
